PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to describe the importance of preparing a ship and the fishing equipment to ensure a safe working area. The learner is able to explain the correct, safe procedures that need to be followed when handling and stowing fishing gear and catch.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Describing how to prepare a ship and equipment for a fishing operation.
  • Explaining the process of handling fishing gear.
  • Describing general safety during fishing operations.
  • Explaining the process of handling fishing gear and catch stowage. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will be assumed competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • South African Maritime Authority's Pre-sea Familiarisation certificate. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • This unit standard deals with basic knowledge of safety with reference to fishing operations, fishing gear and fish handling.
  • Work must be carried out in accordance with the relevant maritime regulations.
  • Vessels may include any commercial vessel engaged on near coastal voyages.
  • Can demonstrate competence by oral examination, and assessment of evidence obtained from one or more of the following:
    > Approved in-service training.
    > Approved training ship.
    > Approved simulator training.
    > Approved laboratory equipment training.
  • This unit standard refers to the Merchant Shipping (Training and Certification) (Fishing and Marine Motorman Qualifications) Regulations - 2006 and any amendments thereafter.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare a ship and equipment for fishing operations. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Preparation may include but is not limited to accepted practice for preparing, replacing, maintaining and positioning of the relevant fishing gear. Recognise irregularities, damage or defects as appropriate to the relevant fishing gear. Reporting irregularities damage or defects.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The equipment checks to be made prior to the beginning of fishing operations are described focussing on safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Fishing gear is maintained, repaired, replaced and positioned as required for safe operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Defects, damage or irregularities are reported timeously to supervisor. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Instructions from supervisor are carried out according to protocol. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Protective/safety gear is worn during fishing operations.

    Explain the process of handling fishing gear.

    Safety rules applicable to dangers caused by vessel's motion, slippery surfaces, fire prevention, fire hazards, and personal protection equipment are identified and explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Types of instructions given by a supervisor are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Common terms used in the fishing industry are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Irregularities that are likely to occur are explained focussing on the action to take to protect life and property.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of following safety rules and instructions are explained with examples of the result of non-compliance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Reasons for proper catch and fishing gear stowage is explained in terms of vessel and crew safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Operation of ship's valves and offal chutes in order to seal spaces from water ingress is demonstrated practically. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Dill/bilge/factory deck pumps are operated to remove of water from areas in accordance with vessel procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The affect on the stability of the vessel especially with regard to heeling moments from loading/discharging operations of gear and catch is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The procedure to report damage or irregularities to a supervisor is explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Explain the process of handling fishing gear and catch stowage.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The consequences of not having sufficient and fit personnel available to ensure safe and efficient fishing operations are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    How reports of any irregularities, damage or defects are evaluated and rectified is explained with maritime sector specific examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Instructions to be given when stowing the catch to ensure the operation are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Construction, application and purposes of deck equipment are described with examples of the role they play in ensuring safety. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Deck equipment may include but are not limited to trawl, gallows, gantries, power blocks, pursing blocks, winches and booms, derricks, net drums and side rollers, line and trap haulers.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Dangers associated with not following fishing operations procedures are described with examples of the problems that might result.

    Dangers may include but are not limited to:
  • Such as shooting all types of fishing gear into the water, hauling fishing gear and landing the catch on board.

    The process of gear handling is explained in accordance with the relevant safety rules.

    Follow up procedures on problems experienced to avoid re-occurrence is explained with examples.
