PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner, on completion of this unit standard, will be able to use effective and legally acceptable methods to promote sport or activities in a community, whereby community awareness and community participation is maximised.

Competent qualifying learners will provide safe, quality and positive experiences to participants, and thereby strengthen and promote the sport profession in general.

In addition learners will strive to upgrade existing sport skills and facilities in rural disadvantaged communities.

In particular, at the conclusion of this unit standard the qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Scoping and identifying needs within the community.
  • Communicating and promoting sport or activities events and programmes.
  • Identifying suitable distribution points for advertisements to involve stakeholders and/or sponsors.
  • Accessing and securing sponsors.
  • Compiling a promotion plan for sport or recreation activities in the community.

    In addition, on completion of this unit standard, the learner will be well positioned to extend his/her learning and practice into other areas of the sport or fitness profession such as leadership or management, or to strive towards sports or fitness management standards at higher levels. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A learner undertaking this unit standard must already have:
  • Demonstrated competence against relevant unit standards at NQF level 3 either through a previous qualification or through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which assesses workplace-based experiential learning.
  • Demonstrated competence in Language and Communication skills at NQF level 3 or equivalent.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A scoping exercise is conducted to determine the basic needs and the nature of the social issues within the community. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Special needs are identified and specified of children, the elderly and infirm, disabled persons and pregnant women. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The target groups are alerted to the feasibility of enhanced sport community activity by listing achievable goals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Community needs are established through the distribution and retrieval of well constructed questionnaires. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Sport and fitness activity meetings are planned, structured and conducted to further assess community needs, generate more interest, solicit assistance from stakeholders and sponsors and to form committees to oversee and manage the process. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Communicate and promote sport activities, events and programmes.

    Local school principals and church ministers are encouraged to take the lead in launching such a community project by outlining achievable goals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Motivational speakers, sports dignitaries as well as oral and visual presentations are used at special mass meetings to promote sport and fitness awareness. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Identify suitable distribution points for advertisements to involve stakeholders and/or sponsors.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Local schools, community centres, hospitals and churches are identified and used as distribution points for sports awareness campaigns. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The attention of the target market is captured in various agreeable ways. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Distribution points are identified for advertisements which will maximise access to the target market. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Co-operation and support of heads of community institutions are elicited by displaying the necessary negotiating and diplomatic skills in order to promote sports awareness campaigns. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A leadership forum to promote, manage and monitor community sport activity is established by meeting with community leaders and outlining their functions.
