PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be capable of supervising kennel practices, kennel personnel and the day to day operations of kennels where dogs are kept. This unit standard will enable the learner to understand the elementary needs which should be provided to dogs within a kennel environment and will also provide them with the knowledge of the legal prescripts and legislation which governs and has an influence on kennel practices. This unit standard is applicable to persons that as part of their duties are required to ensure effective and appropriate supervision and care of dogs in a kennelled environment.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Plan and co-ordinate kennel practices.
  • Supervise personnel and administration systems.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of behaviour of dogs.
  • Supervise service dogs in a kennel.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan the infrastructure of kennel practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Hygienic practices in kennels are planned in accordance with organizational prescripts in line with statutory provisions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Statutory provisions refer to Animal Protection Act 72 of 1962.
  • Hygienic includes cleaning (making use of detergents and water) and parasite control.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A kennel layout is planned taking into account placement of dogs and statutory provisions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Kennel layout refers to direction of kennels, drainage of water, minimum size, shade, space, bedding and building material.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Placement of dogs in kennels is determined considering influencing factors. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Influencing factors include but are not limited to the temperament of the dog, breed of the dog, age of the dog, gender of the dog.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The frequency of maintenance of kennels is supervised according to organizational prescripts. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Maintenance is kennels refer to sharp objects, wire, broken boards; jagged ends are suitably covered and/or repaired, gates in working condition.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Physical resources normally found in a kennel environment are managed according to organizational needs and prescripts. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Physical resources: cleaning equipment, training equipment, feeding equipment, expendable stores.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    History of kennelled dogs is interpreted for statistical purposes for further use. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    History must include: previous owner-where relevant-, identification, medical history, breed (breed records), date of birth, gender, registration number, tattoo or micro-chip, number, posting of dogs.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Information is collated and processed for record keeping purposes. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Collated includes the collection, gathering and interpreting the relevance of information for record keeping and potential referral purposes.
  • Information must include: medical records, consumables, vaccination details, dip recording sheet, performance/ progress report, training qualifications, ability of dog.

    Personnel supervisory principles are applied to reporting personnel.

    Principles: motivation, allocating of duties, planning of shifts.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Dog breeds are described in terms of their behavioural tendencies and intended application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons why principles of conditioning process of dogs are considered important are described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Elementary behavioural and social needs of a dog during phases of its life cycle are described with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Elementary behavioral needs include visual signs of displaying behavior, pack behaviour and signs of aggression and submission.
  • Social needs include ability to express natural behaviour, interaction with dogs, other animals and humans.
  • Phases of life cycle refer only to: juvenile (puppyhood), adulthood and old age (retirement).
  • Behavioral and social needs do not refer to the complete science related to dog behavior and their social needs.

    Gender differences are described with examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Feeding routine for dogs is planned considering prescribed dietary requirements and influencing factors. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Influencing factors includes but are not limited to lactation, maintenance, pregnancy, activity levels, growth.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The daily routine of dogs is planned to ensure well being of dog. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Prescribed medical treatment is administered to the dogs and referrals are made where necessary. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Prescribed medical treatment refers to treatment prescribed by a veterinary surgeon.
