PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills required to:
  • Perform product changeovers.
  • Set printing and conversion process machines.
  • Maintain high level quality production and meet applicable quality standards.
  • Adjust the machine setting in response to changes in the process, the operating conditions or faulty product.

    It also reflects the understanding of:
  • The principles which govern the process settings, the machine conditions, the equipment and the control system design.
  • The principles which govern the behaviour of printing and packaging materials.
  • The impact of machine settings on the material being processed and the quality of the end product.

    This unit standard would be assessed in the following printing and packaging processes e.g.:

    Printing:
  • Letterpress.
  • Screen printing.
  • Flexography.

    Manufacture of packaging, with or without in-line printing processes:

    Setting and adjustment processes are performed safely and without compromising the health of self and others, or of the environment in general. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Safety, health and environmental procedures include the handling and disposal of materials, use of protective equipment such as masks, flammability, contamination, degradation and decomposition.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Setting process is completed according to relevant worksite procedures and within the standard time allowed for the specific product. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Relevant calculations are performed to arrive at process settings and production rates.

    Conduct quality checks on manufactured products, determine conformance to standards and adjust machine settings for any deviations.

  • Product and process related problems include common and uncommon processing problems related to the process or the product.
  • Corrective action can include adjustments to printing or packaging equipment restricted to those elements for which the learner is responsible, or calling for specific assistance.
  • Emergency or critical events include power failure, fires.

    Where faults have occurred, appropriate action is taken to resume quality production within a reasonable period of time.

  • Faults include breakdowns, equipment failure, power outages etc.
  • Appropriate action includes adjustments, shutting down and requesting repairs or maintenance, requesting assistance where the problem exceeds learner's authority, reporting or briefing other personnel and who ever deals with the customer.
  • Reasonable period of time lies within the discretion of assessor to determine and depends on the context and the nature of the problems experienced.
