PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for a learner within the fabrication and welding fields.

A person credited with this unit standard is capable of:
  • Describing the submerged arc welding process.
  • Selecting, setting up and conducting pre-operational checks of submerged arc welding equipment.
  • Preparing components prior to welding.
  • Welding components.
  • Inspecting welded component for defects in compliance with drawing specifications.
  • Caring for and storing welding consumables and equipment.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of any learner by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field. The knowledge, skills and understanding demonstrated in this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the fabrication and welding environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learning relevant to ABET 4, including the learning unit standards:
  • "Welding safety" or equivalent safety unit standard.
  • "Prepare work-pieces for welding".

    Learners should also be made aware of the health hazards associated with the submerged arc welding process.

  • Material type to be used: To be selected from the range of carbon steels (plate only), applicable to the material groups 1, 2, 3 or 11 [according to ISO (TR) 15608).

    Describe and explain the submerged arc welding process and related equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The submerged arc welding equipment is identified, selected and the process is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Basic and major components of the submerged arc welding equipment are identified and the explanation of function and purpose is correct in terms of manufacturer`s requirements and standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The application of flux-material during the submerged arc process is described and explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Terms and definitions used are consistent with generally accepted welding terminology and is acceptable nationally and internationally. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Submerged arc welding equipment may include:

    Suitable welding power source, earth clamp, welding cables, control system, flux hopper, wire-feeder device, flux-feed tube, flux retaining plates, continuous wire-electrode and appropriate tools and equipment.

    Please note:

    Both automatic or semi-automatic applications may be use for assessment purposes and should include:
  • Welding torch, travel mechanism, flux recovery system (automatic welding processes).
  • Welding gun and cable assembly, hopper gun, flux recovery system (semi-automatic processes).

    UNIT STANDARD NOTES 
    Notes to assessors:

    Assessors should keep the following general principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessments at title level are unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, directness, authenticity, sufficiency, openness and consistency.

    This unit standard may be obtained through RPL. The learner should be thoroughly briefed on the mechanism to be used and support and guidance should be provided. Care should be taken that the mechanism used provides the learner with an opportunity to demonstrate competence and is not so onerous as to prevent learners from taking up the RPL option towards gaining a qualification.
