PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is aimed at learners who work or intend to work in the surface coatings industry and/or upstream or downstream industries.

This unit will contribute to the full development of the learner by providing recognition and mobility within the field of manufacturing and assembly. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth within the chemical manufacturing environment.

    Range and terminology
  • Surface coating/paint means a liquid chemical material that dries to form a thin film on the substrate/surface. (Sorry, I can't get the bullet to line up.).
  • Substrate/surface means the underlying or exposed surface.
  • Types of surface coatings may include waterborne undercoats/primers and solvent based primers, undercoats and topcoats.
  • Substrates may include cement plaster, wood, mild steel, galvanized steel.
  • Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) mean controlled documentation and/or verbal instructions by a superior pertaining to tasks that are specific to the process and /or equipment being used.
  • Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) is that part of Quality Assurance which ensures that a product is manufactured consistently and controlled to quality standards appropriate to their intended use.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) includes gloves, masks, respirators, aprons, overcoats, safety shoes, ear protection and eye protection.
  • Relevant legislation means legislation pertaining to the chemical manufacturing environment and include acts and regulations that control occupational health and safety, water and the environment.
