PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to implement hygiene practices in grain storage.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Identify the types of contamination and the causative agents that can occur in grain.
  • Monitor and control the moisture content of stored grain.
  • Monitor and control fungal and bacterial contamination of stored grain.
  • Monitor and administer pest control in stored grain.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate knowledge of the types of contamination and the causative agents that can occur in stored grain. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to:

    Fungi, bacteria, insects, rodents, moisture, contaminated grain, poor ventilation, infrequent fumigation, poor pest control. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The various fungal infestations that may contaminate stored grain are described according to standard industry criteria. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The fungal contamination are described in terms of, but not limited to:

    Origin, identification characteristics, common industry names, causative factors, the impact that the fungus has on the stored grain, preventative measures, health hazards, phyto-sanitary regulations.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The various bacterial infestations that may contaminate stored grain are described according to standard industry criteria. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The fungal contamination are described in terms of, but not limited to:

    Origin, identification characteristics, common industry names, causative factors, the impact that the bacteria has on the stored grain, preventative measures, health hazards, phyto-sanitary regulations.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The possible results that a rodent infestation may have on stored grain are described in terms of the impact of the contamination on grain storage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The various factors that result in a high moisture content in stored grain are detailed as applicable to grain storage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The effects and impact that a high moisture content has on stored grain are described as applicable to grain storage.

    Monitor and control the moisture content of stored grain.

    Relative humidity, ventilation, visual moisture detection, SOPs, sprouting. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The moisture content of stored grain is monitored in accordance with the methods described in the standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Visual inspection on the stored grain is conducted to identifying signs of sprouting according to standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The temperature of stored grain is monitored to identify signs of temperature increase from respiration according to standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Deviations in temperature are corrected by adjusting and controlling ventilation according to standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of failing to address a high moisture content are explained as applicable to stored grain.

    Monitor and control fungal and bacterial contamination of stored grain.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Stored grain is inspected for signs of fungal or bacterial contamination in terms of the methods detailed in workplace standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Fungal or bacterial contamination is eradicated with the use of fumigation according to standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of not addressing the fungal or bacterial contamination are explained as applicable to grain storage. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Monitor and administer pest control in stored grain. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to:

    Pest control, hygiene, frequency of cleaning, littering, housekeeping, standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Hygienic conditions of the grain storage facilities are monitored in terms of the workplace standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The cleaning and frequency of cleaning of grain storage facilities are monitored and maintained according to standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The necessity of monitoring and restricting littering in the grain storage facilities is explained according to standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The facility's housekeeping conditions are monitored and maintained in terms of workplace policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The effectiveness of the pest control practices are monitored and maintained according to standard operating procedures (SOPs). 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    The assessment of qualifying learners against this standard should meet the requirements of established principles. Practical assessment activities will be used, which are appropriate to the contents in which qualifying learners are working. These activities will include an appropriate combination of self and peer assessment, practical and oral assessments, observations etc.

    The assessment should ensure that all the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge be assessed. The specific outcomes must be assessed in its own right, through oral and practical evidence. It cannot be assessed by observation only.

    The specific outcomes and essential knowledge must be assessed in relation to each other. If a qualifying learner is able to explain the essential embedded knowledge, but is unable to perform the specific outcomes, then they should not be assessed as competent. Similarly, if a learner is able to perform specific outcomes, but is unable to explain or justify their performance in terms of the essential embedded knowledge, they should not be assessed as competent.

    Evidence of the specified critical cross-field outcomes should be found, both in performance and in the essential embedded knowledge.

    Performance of specific outcomes must actively affirm target groups of qualifying learners, not unfairly discriminate against them. Qualifying learners should be able to justify their performance in terms of these values.

    Assessors must:
  • Be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Hold an assessor certificate according to the current requirements.
  • Have experience or an in depth knowledge of the Animal Feeds Manufacturing industry or Grain Handling.

    UNIT STANDARD NOTES 
    The Learner:
  • Is expected to perform the specific outcomes reflected in this unit standard without direct supervision.
  • Should have access to work site procedures.
  • Should demonstrate an application of ethics and values.
  • Must apply basic principles of general safety and customer care.
  • Should demonstrate an awareness of the expectations and obligations of basic employee/employer relations including industrial relations principles.

    At this level the communication/reporting of issues arising in the workplace, is embedded in the specific outcomes and the related assessment criteria.

    It is understood that, due to the nature of the work environment and the skills level of the Learner, that the aspects of teamwork form an integral part of the necessary specific outcomes and related assessment criteria.
