PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The qualifying learner will be capable of understanding the principles of ship stability in relation to piloting a vessel in order to minimise the risks in the event of a casualty.

The qualifying learner should satisfy the competent pilotage authority's requirements that his/her medical fitness, particularly regarding eyesight, hearing and physical fitness meets the standards required for certification of masters and officers in charge of a navigational watch under the international Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW 1995) or as the relevant authorities consider appropriate.

Qualifying learners will be capable of:
  • Understanding the principles of longitudinal stability.
  • Applying knowledge of loadline marks.
  • Explaining the principles of transverse stability.
  • Limiting risks in the event of casualty.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF level 4 or equivalent.
  • Mathematics at NQF level 4 or equivalent.
  • Physical Science at NQF level 4 or equivalent.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Understand the principles of longitudinal stability.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The principles of longitudinal stability are explained in terms of trimming a vessel.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The effects on the manoeuvrability of a vessel are explained in relation to trim.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Optimal trim conditions are described in relation to dry docking.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Apply knowledge of loadline marks.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The significance of the loadline marks and statutory freeboard is explained in relation to vessels.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The relationship between permitted summer draft and actual dock water draft is verified by calculations and reference to hydrostatic data.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Loadline regulations are explained in relation to an overloaded vessel in terms of national and international regulations and local port procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Explain the principles of transverse stability.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The principles of transverse static stability is explained in relation to the distribution of weights on-board a vessel.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The principles of transverse dynamic stability is explained in relation to the distribution of weights on-board a vessel.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The effects of the angle of heel on drafts during turning of a vessel is calculated for various load conditions.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Limit risks in the event of casualty.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Data on damage is identified and recorded in relation to the vessel.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The situation is assessed and reported to the relevant authorities in accordance with the local port procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Damage control, in conjunction with the relevant authorities and bridge team procedures, is activated to retain stability and prevent loss of life and environmental instability.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5
    Understand the effects of draft.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Draft effects include, but are not limited to: light and deep draft vessels, stopping distances, wind effect on light and deep draft vessels, squat and speed and increase of draft due to angle of heel.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The significance of draft is identified in relation to different types of vessels.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The significance of draft is explained in relation to the ship's manoeuvrability.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The effects of draft are described using examples.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
