PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to prepare, lay out and set up work areas for a range of carpentry practices carried out on building sites in accordance with National Building Regulations, Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and best practice carpentry standards.

This competence supports and enhances the other Masonry competencies. The generic competencies outlined in this unit standard should facilitate portability of masonry skills across different contexts within the construction industry.

It contributes to the development of a professional community of Masonry practitioners. The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved.

    The learner should be able to determine quantities for the following special materials:
    Corner units, sill blocks and bricks, coping blocks.

    Scaffolding refers to basic scaffolding and ladders used in the masonry trade.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the CETA - ETQA, for "The National Certificate in Construction Masonry".
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the CETA - ETQA.
  • CETA - ETQA is responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.

  • Read working drawings carefully and thoroughly in order to interpret correctly the specified requirements for the work at hand.

  • Confirm your understanding of all specified requirements with the client/architect before commencing with the work at hand so as to minimise future delays that might be caused because this work has to be redone.
  • Communicate in a clear and audible manner when issuing instructions to team members so that all verbal instructions are clearly understood and can be carried out as required.

  • Check the safety and security of scaffolding at the beginning of each new work day to minimise accident or injury to yourself and other team members.
  • Use the specified mortar and ratios to achieve the correct mortar mix.
