PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard provides a broad introduction to the production and understanding of working mechanical drawings. It is the starting point for a learner in this sector. The focus is knowledge, skills, values and attitudes in relation to the learner`s own context and experience of the world of work.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of conventional representation for mechanical draughting
  • Explaining and drawing cam profiles
  • Sectional drawings are described and drawn
  • Detailed drawings are described and primary views drawn
  • Describing and producing an assembly drawing

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
  • Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in mathematics, engineering science and technical drawing at NQF level 4 or equivalent.
  • Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in computer technology at Level 3 on the NQF or equivalent.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
  • The primary views of an assembly drawing will include dimensioning, sectional as well as outside views, machining and surface texture symbols as well as ISO limits and fits and instruction notes, conventional representation of drilled and tapped holes as well as specially manufactured bolts and nuts.
  • Conventional representation will include a single spur gear, spur gears in mesh, screw threads and helical springs.
  • Cam profiles will include constant velocity, uniform acceleration, and retardation and simple harmonic motion.
  • Machining and surface texture symbols will include removal of material by machining, removal within a limit, removal between a high and low limit, production method, sample length, machining allowance, no machining, no machining with a limit and a method to avoid repeating a symbol.
  • Surface texture processes will include flame cut, saw, mill, ream, bore, turn, grind, polish and sand blast.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
