PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard provides a broad introduction to the preparation and producing of computer aided drawings. It is the starting point for a learner in this sector. The focus is knowledge, skills, values and attitudes in relation to the learner`s own context and experience of the world of work.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Producing computer aided drawings to line stage
  • Detailing the computer aided drawing
  • Verifying detailed drawing
  • Producing hard copy of final drawing

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
  • Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in mathematics, engineering science and technical drawing at NQF level 4 or equivalent.
  • Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in computer technology at Level 3 on the NQF or equivalent.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
  • Drawings will include general draughting, mechanical draughting, architectural / civil draughting, structural steel detailing, electrical draughting, piping and instrumentation draughting
  • CAD commands to perform drawing operations will include:
  • Creation of various drawing display levels on the screen; drawing of various line-types; drawing of geometrical figures, drawing of tangential lines, sectioning of sectional views, insertion of dimensions, stretch, mirror and alterations / amendments to drawn views, insertion of fillets, chamfers and radii, enlarging and reducing, erasing, deletions and undeletions, repetition of repeated detail, grouping and blocking of portions of a drawing on the screen ("patterns" or "blocks"), insertion and manipulation of text, copy, move and rotate, measurement of lengths, angles and areas, change the scales of drawings, dividing an entity into an equal number of parts, zoom in and out, trimming of line segments, break-out defined entities such as lines, arcs and circles, reading and retrieving of files, reference and merging of files - read and write commands, conversion of files into different formats (e.g. ASCII or DXF), cleaning up a completed drawing, moving and scaling drawings to fit various sheet sizes, plotting of drawings, exit CAD program and return to the operating system.
  • Drawings will include both normal 2D and 3D modelling drawings
  • Code of practice for engineering drawing will include SABS 0111 and additional codes of practice
