PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard has been developed for the surveying occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement by gaining surveying skills leading to a qualification based on unit standards. A person who has successfully completed this unit standard is able to perform distance measurements using a tape and Electronic Distance Measurement (EDM)) equipment.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge related to Tape and EDM instruments and planning required for distance measurement
  • Prepare to perform Tape and EDM distance measurement in accordance with task specific requirements
  • Perform Tape and EDM distance measurement in accordance with task specific standards
  • Complete the work sequence for distance measurement

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    NQF level 4, and numeracy and literacy that will facilitate better understanding and proficiency in this unit standard. The ability to obtain information from a plan and to reduce basic distance measurements (Tape and EDM) for use in Surveying will also facilitate better understanding and proficiency in this unit standard.

    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or will assess this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA and registered with FE / HE registrar.
    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
