PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard forms part of the Qualification, National Certificate in Funeral Services Practice and is registered at Level 5 on the National Qualifications Framework. Learners working towards this standard will be learning towards the full qualification, or will be involved in or working within a funeral services environment, specialising in Embalming, Marketing and Merchandising or Disaster Management, where the acquisition of competence against this standard will add value to each individual and the Funeral Industry as a whole.


The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Conducting repairs to human remains
  • Evaluating and dealing with problems in the preparation of human remains. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification, will have demonstrated competency in
  • Numeracy at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.
  • English, verbal and written communication at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.

    Conduct repairs to human remains.

    1. Human remains are inspected to identify repairs to be undertaken. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Repairing of human remains will only include superficial wounds and damage
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Superficial facial wounds are closed and sealed. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Superficial wounds will include skin cuts and into the derma only)
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Body wounds are sutured and sealed to stop leakage.

    Body wounds will include external, piercing body wounds, incisions and uncomplicated body wounds)

    4. Cosmetics are applied as per instructions.

    1. Outcomes of human remains preparation are evaluated at pre-determined intervals against standards and instructions.

    2. Non-conformance is identified and remedial action taken to rectify.

    3. Outstanding preparation and coffining problems are dealt with within agreed time frames.
