PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is a building block in the understanding of the concept of risk. As such it is a life skill. It is relevant for all learners irrespective of the sector in which they are employed.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying own role and the risk associated with performance at work.
  • Understanding work procedures in the workplace and the risk of non-compliance.
  • Suggesting ways of managing risk in own work position.
  • Describing the behaviours and attitudes that constitute positive and negative risk in the workplace. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners should be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this unit standard is:
  • An organisation or company includes a small, medium or micro enterprise or sole owner business.
  • Unpredictable or unusual circumstances include situations for which there is no known policy, unusual procedures or situations out of authority level.
  • Measures to minimise risk could include cost and maintenance of equipment, budget issues, mandated levels of authority, occupational health and safety measures.

    1. Procedures required in predictable situations are known and explained with reference to a particular company or case studies.

    2. Sources of information are known and accessed in unusual or unpredictable circumstances for three given situations.

    3. The risk associated with non-compliance with company procedures is explained with reference to case studies.

    4. Ways in which information can be verified are named and an indication is given of why it is important to authenticate sources of information.

    5. The risk to the employer associated with acting on or repeating unverified or unsubstantiated information is explained and a judgment is made as to who to trust as a source for three different case studies.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Risk is identified for a particular position in an organisation in terms of upside and downside risk. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Potential risk associated with a given procedure is named and measures to minimise the risk are explained with reference to a specific organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Measures to minimise risk for a particular procedure are evaluated and recommendations are made to help minimise the risk. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Describe the behaviours and attitudes that constitute positive and negative risk in the workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Personal behaviour that could pose a risk to an employment contract is identified and a personal code of conduct is drafted to manage the risk. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Personal behaviour that could be construed as an upside risk to the company is named and an indication is given of the positive spin off. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Attitudes and values that promote good or positive relationships in the workplace are identified and a self-assessment is made to establish how well own values and attitudes contribute to positive work relationships. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Behaviours and attitudes most valued by co-workers or colleagues are surveyed and own behaviour is analysed for both positive and negative risk when compared to the perceived dominant value system and own experiences in workplace relationships. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. A personal action plan is drafted to manage risk associated with own behaviour and attitudes.

    Assessment of this Unit Standard should be contextual and practical.
  • Assessors must be registered as assessors with the Services SETA ETQA or an ETQA that represents the sectors in which the learner is employed.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the Services SETA ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Services SETA ETQA.
  • The mechanisms and requirements for moderation should be applied in accordance with the requirements of the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment should include both formative and summative assessment.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the Services SETA ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Services SETA ETQA.
