PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for managers, people at workplaces who are exposed to occupational health and occupational hygiene risks, safety officers, safety representatives, occupational health and safety personnel, occupational hygienists, underwriters, insurance assessors and risk managers who are responsible in part or in full for the management of occupational health and occupational hygiene who should be conversant with the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and its regulations, as amended, and the consequences of non-compliance.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Understanding the legislation regulating occupational health and occupational hygiene in a selected industry.
  • Describing the nature of occupational hygiene stressors in a specific workplace.
  • Applying the risk management process to manage occupational health and occupational hygiene risk in a specific workplace.
  • Designing an occupational health and occupational hygiene programme for a specific organisation.

  • Physical stressors include heat, cold, noise, lighting, vibration and air quality.
  • Chemical stressors include flammables, toxics, explosives and corrosives.
  • Biological stressors include viruses, bacteria, allergens parasites and toxins.
  • Ergonomic stressors include workplace design, man job specifications and biokinetics.
  • Radiation stressors include ionizing, non ionizing and electromagnetic forces.

    1. An occupational hygiene programme is designed in order to address the hygiene problems at a specific site.

    2. A medical surveillance programme is developed to monitor the effectiveness of the occupational hygiene controls.

    3. An occupational health programme is designed to meet the legal requirements of the specific industry or workplace.

    4. The records required for the occupational hygiene programme, medical surveillance and occupational health plan are designed for a specific workplace and an indication is given of how long it is necessary to retain the different records.

    5. An outline of a training programme for employees is developed that complies with occupational health and occupational hygiene requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be obtained from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance Body, through summative and formative assessment by a registered assessor.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the INSQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the INSQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with INSQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Agreement with INSQA.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.

    Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
