In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is for people working as environmental education practitioners in a range of contexts, from environmental education centres and heritage sites to community-based projects, business or government departments.

People credited with this unit standard will be able to reflect critically on their practice as environmental education practitioners and use the information and insights obtained to improve their practice.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Reflect critically on implementation of an environmental learning programme or action project
  • Adapt activities based on evaluation
  • Identify self-development needs and take responsibility for fulfilling these

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The learner should demonstrate GETC or equivalent. This unit standard does not assume prior environmental education training or experience. However, it does assume that the learner is currently involved in an environmental learning programme, activity or action project. The goals, plans and actions of an existing project will be evaluated. This unit standard requires the candidate to be open to learning from experience and willing to adapt plans in the light of evidence.

Although this process can be undertaken without reference to evaluation theories, a basic understanding of an action research cycle of planning, implementing and evaluating action is recommended.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE
This unit standard is relevant and applicable at any level on the NQF. At level 4 the learner will be guided by a supervisor or more experienced and / or qualified colleagues, while at higher levels s/he will take increasing personal responsibility for learning from reflection on action.

At level 4 the learner may not understand the theoretical foundations of evaluation, reflection and reflexivity. However, at higher levels on the NQF this unit standard will be more strongly informed by theory.

This unit standard assumes that the process of evaluation is a continuous one; therefore, reflection should take place at all stages of a project and not just summatively.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:
