PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner will be able to understand the purpose of soil tillage, the cultivation of soil and the identification and control of weed.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of soil cultivation/tillage.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of weed control in a vineyard.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of soil cultivation/tillage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The purposes of soil tillage are explained according to tillage criteria. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tillage criteria may refer to aeration of the soil, soil moistures, water filtration, soil structure, soil temperature and cover crops.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The methods of soil tillage are explained in relation advantages and disadvantages for growing vines. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Methods of soil tillage may refer to mechanical methods, minimum tillage by means of a cover crop and methods for periodical intensive tillage.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Adaptation methods of tillage are explained according in relation to soil types, dry land and irrigated vineyards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate an understanding of weed control in a vineyard.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The factors impacting on weed growth in a vineyard is explained in relation to quality control criteria. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Factors may refer to moisture -, nutrient quality, soil temperature, toxic material -, pests - and diseases favouritism, fire hazards and unpleasant working conditions for workers.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Different types of weed are identified in relation to own context. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Types of weed may refer to annual versus perennial and problem weeds; Broad leaf versus narrow leaf weeds and winter versus summer weeds.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Weed control methods are explained in relation to advantages and disadvantages for vineyards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Weed control methods may refer to chemical, mechanical and biological control methods.
    Chemical control methods may refer to the selective use of weedicides and the toxic or residual soil safety.
    Biological control may refer to using cover- crops
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Internal moderation.
  • External moderation.
  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.
  • All assessment activities must be fair, so that all candidates have equal opportunities. Activities must be free of gender, ethnic or other bias.
  • Assessment and moderation procedures, activities and tools must be transparent, affordable and support development within the field, sub-field and NQF.
  • Questions and answers to determine theoretical knowledge are expected.
  • Examination of an assessment portfolio.
  • Reporting skills are demonstrated by effective communication, using verbal (language) and/or writing skills.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the appropriate ETQA.
