PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard forms part of the qualification GETC: Manufacturing, Engineering and related activities and is specifically for learners working in the informal sector who are currently operating, or who wish to start, their own garment making business.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Cutting out garment parts using a commercial pattern.
  • Preparing the workplace and setting the sewing machine.
  • Sewing, finishing and pressing the garment.
  • Checking the quality of the completed garment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners have demonstrated Communication and Numeracy competency at ABET Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The garment types selected will be basic garments or home textile that may have no fastening devices such as zips or buttons, but could include Velcro or elastic.
  • Minimum of two different garments or home textiles should be completed.
  • The machine used can be a domestic, lockstitch sewing machine, either hand, treadle or electric.
  • Tools used for cutting will be hand scissors or cutting shears.
  • Tools used for finishing will be hand sewing needles.
  • Finishing operations may include decorative stitching, beading, attaching applique, pressing.

    Fabric is laid according to cutting requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Correct pattern pieces are placed and secured on fabric according to cutting specifications and achieving optimum fabric utilisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Appropriate cutting tools are selected according to cutting requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Garment parts and notches are accurately cut according to pattern requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Cut garment parts are bundled ready for sewing according to sequence of sewing operations.

    Prepare sewing machine.

    Sewing machine is set to achieve the required stitch and seam quality as required by the customer.

    Garment parts are laid out according to an appropriate method and quality standard.

    Sewn garment is finished using suitable tools according to an appropriate method, quality and time standard.

    Check quality and pack completed garment.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Learning programmes that will enable the achievement of this unit standard will be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • All moderation of assessments will be conducted at the discretion of the relevant ETQA.
