PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this unit standard will able to identify vehicle locks and the methods of opening the locks. They are also able to remove an old lock and refit the vehicle with a new lock. This unit standard deals with the authorised access of opening a vehicle without a key.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Identify makes and models of vehicles.
  • Explain the functioning of vehicle locking mechanisms.
  • Open a vehicle.

  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    Vehicle makes are identified in terms of their influence on the opening of the vehicle lock.

    Vehicle models are identified in terms of their influence on the opening of the vehicle lock.

    Explain the functioning of vehicle locking mechanisms.

    Vehicle locking mechanisms are explained in terms of the make and model of the vehicles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Components of locking systems are identified in terms of the impact of the opening of a vehicle. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Components include but are not limited to air bags, central locking and electronic cabling.

    Open a vehicle.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Principles of specialised lock opening methods are explained with an example of each opening method. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Methods include but are not limited to: mechanical and electronic methods.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Vehicle is opened in accordance with job specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Vehicle lock is removed and replaced according to job specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Vehicle lock is inspected in order to ensure it is in working order. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Vehicle components that were removed are restored to their original state.
