PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are required to evaluate a site for military surveillance and communications systems in the context of the sovereignty of the state and government law enforcement through a structured scenario. Electronic warfare encompasses manipulation of the electro-magnetic spectrum to take control, deny undesirable use and to exploit own use thereof. This unit standard considers the skills and knowledge required for conducting a site analysis taking all planning and tactical considerations into account.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Evaluate the area of operations.
  • Evaluate potential deployment positions.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The credit calculation for this unit standard is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:
  • Communication at NQF level 4.
  • Mathematics at NQF level 4.
  • Computer literacy at NQF level 3.

    Evaluate the area of surveillance and communications operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    Operational instructions are interpreted in order to comply with operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    EW system coverage is calculated in order to select the most suitable site for the given operation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    System coverage includes radio horizon, radar horizon, path profiles, own and foreign system performance.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Coverage area is plotted on a map in accordance with organisational requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Evaluate potential deployment positions.

    The positions identified are suited to the coverage area. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Indicators of suitability include height, location, and interference.

    The positions identified are suitable to deployment requirements.

    Indicators of suitability include accessibility, Safety, Health & Environment (SHE), security, sensitivity, interference and physical characteristics.

    Analysed sites are prioritised in terms of operational requirements, strengths and weaknesses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Recommendations are made on the basis of operational requirements in agreed time frames.

    A site selection report is presented in accordance with organisational policy requirements.
