This unit standard is for people who select and mark trees for thinning in commercial forestry.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Prepare for selection and marking of trees for thinning.
  • Select and mark trees for a specific thinning. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1.

    First, second and third thinning.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare for selection and marking of trees for thinning. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Purpose of thinning is explained in terms of the effect on crop growth, access and the final product. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    More light better growth, ease of movement and increased for final product.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Hazards and their influences are explained and their effect minimised. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Personal protective equipment is selected out and used according to company policy and/or legal requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Equipment is inspected for serviceability and corrective action is taken in line with company specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Plantation map is interpreted to identify the correct compartment boundaries. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Equipment is transported and carried in line with company specific procedure.

    Select and mark trees for a specific thinning.

    Trees to be removed are selected and marked according to company procedure.

    Trees are selected to ensure correct stocking according to company policy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Selected trees are marked clearly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Marking results are documented according to prescribed company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Work rate meets predetermined production standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Equipment is maintained in a functional condition during and after task.
