PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who conduct maintenance on herbicide applicators not driven by a power source.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Prepare to conduct maintenance.
  • Conduct maintenance.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance.
  • Administer applicator maintenance.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard excludes maintenance on power-driven equipment.

    Prepare to conduct maintenance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Correct tools are laid out to ensure effective maintenance. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Flat and Phillips screwdriver, long nose pliers, nylon mallet, dowel stick.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safety clothes and equipment are used where applicable. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tools are inspected for serviceability and corrective action taken according to work-site procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Spare parts of applicator are identified and their purpose explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Conduct maintenance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The applicator is dismantled according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Correct tools are used according to a specific task. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Fault finding is carried out according to work-site procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Blockage, pressure, mechanical, leaks.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Defective spare parts are fitted according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Causes of defects in spare parts are established and reported to supervisor to prevent abuse of applicator.

    Conduct preventative maintenance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Purpose of preventative maintenance is explained in terms of the effect on the lifetime of the machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Spraying applicators are inspected and cleaned before spraying season to ensure serviceability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Stock level prescriptions of fast moving spares are adhered to. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Administer applicator maintenance.

    Parts are ordered from the manufacturer's catalogue.

    Stock level prescriptions are adhered to according to company policy.
