PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Provide sufficient water and nutrition for the seedlings.
  • Carry out pest control checks and controls.
  • Harden off the seedlings in preparation for transplanting.
  • Utilize knowledge of seedling care in a farm nursery.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Maintain the environment of newly germinated seedlings. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: gradual introduction of hardening off procedures including: decreasing the watering frequency, light intensity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of maintaining the correct level of moisture in the seedling environment is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effect on root development, by decreasing the frequency of watering, is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The amount of sunlight that the seedlings require is described. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Conduct the 'growing on' procedures for Rooibos seedlings.

    The range includes but is not limited to: watering, fertilizing, monitor growth.

    Demonstrate knowledge of pest controls for the seedlings.

    The range includes but is not limited to: signs of insect activity, recognizing bacterial diseases, weeding, applying pesticides.

    The signs that indicate the presence of harmful insects on or around the seedlings are described.

    The various methods of applying pesticides are demonstrated.

    The symptoms of bacterial diseases in seedlings are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The weeds most commonly found in Rooibos seedbeds are identified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The procedures for the manual removal of weeds from the seedbeds are demonstrated.

    Demonstrate knowledge of hardening off the seedlings in preparation for transplanting.

    The Learner
