PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who work, or intend to work in a packing operation within a manufacturing environment. This unit will contribute towards the achievement of a National Certificate in Chemical Manufacturing at NQF Level 2.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Prepare to pack products.
  • Package products on a semi-automated packing line.
  • Complete packaging activities. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence at ABET 4 Language and ABET 3 Numeracy. They should also have demonstrated competence against the unit standard: Maintain health, hygiene and safety in a chemical environment. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Packaging includes: inner and outer packaging of product using various types of wrapping, tying, and adhesive materials and containers, and packing into boxes and/or cardboards, according to prescribed patterns and making use of date code technology.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Packaging materials are ready and available in sufficient quantities for the product type, colour and size requirements of the production schedule. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The work environment is clean and free from hazards, in line with documented best practice and standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is worn so that it protects the operator and prevents the product being spoiled. All protective equipment is worn or used as described in the maker's instructions, company policy and safety legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The status of the entire packing line is verified through communication with upstream and downstream personnel, and any problems are rectified before the start of packing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. All equipment is checked to ensure suitability for product to be packaged, and good working order.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Product is packaged so that product and materials wastage is kept to a minimum. Where there is waste, it is disposed of in line with standard operating procedures and environmental policies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Visual quality checks are carried out to ensure that packaged product meets specifications. Non-conforming product is removed and reworked, in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Consequences of dispatching non-conforming product to the customer are explained in terms of cost to production and consumer satisfaction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Packing line problems are discussed, and assistance is provided to team members in order to rectify any errors or jams that have occurred. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Good housekeeping is applied throughout the shift. The work environment is clean and free from hazards in line with documented best practice and standard operating procedures.

    1. Packaging of products is completed by the agreed time, and in accordance to production requirements.

    2. Equipment used is cleaned and prepared for the next run, in line with the requirements of the product being manufactured, manufacturer's recommendations, and statutory, health, safety and environmental standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Any problems or difficulties that occur after packaging activities are noted, and solutions are developed to improve performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. All required documentation is completed accurately, as per organizational or statutory requirements.
