PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful to learners who are working within a Public Sector, Local Government, commercial or community environment, and will fulfill a leadership role as part of their job. This Unit Standard will also add value to public officials who are seeking to develop a career pathway towards an accomplished integrated development planner or public sector management and administration specialist.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining leadership strategies to deal with managing a variety of roleplayers and stakeholders.
  • Creating an optimum advice environment.
  • Enhancing institutional accountability in managing relations with stakeholders and communities.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the varying dynamics in managing relationships.
  • Developing a sound communications strategy to enhance relations with key stakeholders and communities.

    Outline the different types of roleplayers and relationships that exist for a leader within the public sector context and outline how these relationships can be managed.

    The concept of relationship management is analysed in the context of fulfilling leadership role.

    The various roleplayers that are key to public sector functions are identified.

    The benefits and risks of citizen participation are identified and discussed in relation to the leaders role in managing the risks involved.

    Political realities, power struggles and other external factors impacting on relationship management are outlined with examples and possible solutions for overcoming the various obstacles associated with these factors are proposed within related work context.

    Areas of conflict and potential conflict are identified in a proactive manner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Diversity management is integrated into leadership role and diversity of thinking is leveraged to enhance relations with roleplayers.
