PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners accessing this standard will be involved in project management teams or involved in building small project management teams. This standard will also add value to learners who are running their own business and recognise that project management forms an integral component of any business. Learners accessing this standard will be working as a leader in the context of a small project / sub-project involving few resources and having a limited impact on stakeholders and the environment or working as a contributing team member on a medium to large project when not a leader.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying project types, nature and providing guidance on appropriate project strategies and tactics.
  • Suggesting appropriate structures, methods and processes to projects.
  • Checking and verifying that a project environment is established.
  • Evaluating, recording and consolidating lessons from project experiences.

  • Support project environment and activities may include but is not limited to identifying and using appropriate organisational structures and supervising a project team in the context of a small project / sub-project involving few resources and having a limited impact on stakeholders and the environment.
  • A project objective is something measurable towards which work is directed, a strategic position to be obtained, purpose to be achieved, result to be obtained, product to be produced or service to be performed.
  • Project structures may include but is not limited to organisational, work, cost, product (deliverables) and objectives.
  • Documented processes and procedures may include but is not limited to change, control, planning, procurement, communication, status reporting, payment, contract administration, close out, handover, resources and risk.
  • Delivery strategies may include but is not limited to one shot, incremental, iterative and phases.
  • Projects at this level will include but is not limited to single projects rather than simultaneously managed multiple projects.
  • Relevant "subject matter" expertise may be required where learners will apply generic project management within specific areas / economic sectors.
