PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard requires learners to be able to demonstrate knowledge of airflow calculations and principles of airflow in a ventilation circuit. Learners will also be able to demonstrate knowledge of basic calculations relating to pressure and airflow. Learners credited with this Unit Standard are capable of:
  • Selecting methods and instruments for measuring pressures and airflow that are appropriate for specified contexts.
  • Assessing the functionality of instruments used for measuring pressure and airflow to ensure safety, health and productivity.
  • Evaluating the test and calculation results to take appropriate action. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 4.

    The basic units of measurement are explained and are according to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The definitions pertaining to airflow are given in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The design air velocities in particular airways and ducts are explained according to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The importance of designing air velocities for particular airways and ducts is explained in terms of the consequences to health, safety and production. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The pressure losses in a ventilation circuit are described and explained according to specified requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Assess the functionality of instruments used for airflow determination to ensure safety, health and productivity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The velocity and volume flow rate of air is calculated in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The velocity and volume flow rates from Pitot tube measurements are calculated according to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Calculations involving the use of formulae are in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The airflow rates for airways in parallel and series are calculated according to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The size of a regulator is calculated according to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The calculation of basic pollutant dilutions, involving mixing of two or more air streams at the same density, is according to specified requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Determine airflow rates and circuit pressures using appropriate instruments.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of continuously assessing health and safety hazards and risks is explained in terms of the possible consequences for health, safety and productivity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The pressure difference between two points is determined according to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The pressure drop across airways in series and in parallel is calculated in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Natural ventilating pressure (NVP) is calculated in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The pressure loss in a ventilation circuit is calculated according to the Atkinson's formula. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The calculation of an unknown element in Atkinson's formula is performed according to specified requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited, as a provider, through the relevant ETQA by SAQA. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
