PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Analyse the effects of mass and centre of gravity limitations on aircraft operations.
  • Compile aeroplane loadsheets.
  • Calculate aeroplane centre of gravity position.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The terms "aircraft" and "aeroplane" are used as synonyms where appropriate.

    Loading and centre of gravity scenarios typically found in airline transport operations and/or strategic military lift aeroplanes.

    Analyse the effects of mass and centre of gravity limitations on aircraft operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The effects of centre of gravity position on aeroplane stability and control and performance are analysed in order to ensure aircraft safety. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Centre of gravity within and outside of manufacturers' limitations.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effects of overloading of the aeroplane are described.

    Compile aeroplane loadsheets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The contents and structure of a typical aeroplane loadsheet are evaluated in order to understand the methodology behind the calculations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The mass limitations are extracted from aeroplane manufacturer's data to ensure centre of gravity renewing within safety parameters. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Aeroplane loading is calculated, to remain within limitations and achieve operational objectives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The procedure and documentation for weighing of the aeroplane is justified with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The term weighing refers to re-weighing and mandatory periodic weighing.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Fuel loading calculations and conversions are evaluated in order for centre of gravity to renew within safety parameters.

    Calculate aeroplane centre of gravity position.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Weight moment arm and centre of gravity position is calculated from manufacturer's data and loading information.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA in accordance with the current ETQA regulations.

    Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others by:
  • Using electronic systems to plan aeroplane loading and generating load documentation.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation:
  • Understanding the overall impact of correct load distribution in aeroplanes and accurate load documentation on flight safety and commercially viable flight operations.
