PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard intended for learners who deal with transportation insurance which is a highly specialised class of business in Short Term Insurance. It will be useful for Intermediaries and Learners in Logistics and Freight Forwarding.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Analysing the impact of different types of transport on transportation risk.
  • Analysing the perils in transportation insurance.
  • Analysing the inherent qualities of cargo and the associated risks.
  • Explaining transportation cover.

    Learners should be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at Level 3.

    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is
  • Criminal acts include, but are not limited to fraud, burglary, hijacking and piracy.
  • Environmental risks include, but are not limited to nuclear explosions, burst pipelines, pollution of earth, water and air.
  • Institute Cargo clauses include Clauses A, B and C and Air and relevant Institutes War Strikes Clauses.

    Analyse the impact of different types of transport on transportation risk. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different modes of sea transport are identified and an indication is given of the inherent risk associated with each type of vessel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Different modes of land transport are identified and an indication is given of the inherent risk associated with each type of transport. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Different modes of air transport are identified and an indication is given of the inherent risk associated with moving cargo by air. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The costs of transporting goods by land, sea and air are compared and an indication is given of when each mode is most relevant in terms of costs, related market conditions and the associated risks. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Analyse the perils in transportation insurance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Geographical events that cause loss in transportation insurance are analysed in terms of high, medium and low risk. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Environmental perils are analysed and an indication is given of how each could impact on transportation insurance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    At least three different criminal acts are analysed in terms of their impact on transportation insurance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Risks related to accidental damage in transportation insurance are analysed from a case study. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Risks related to malicious damage in transportation insurance are analysed from a case study.

    Analyse the inherent qualities of cargo and the associated risks.

    Different types of cargo are classified in terms of high, medium and low risk. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Different types of packaging are investigated in terms of their impact on risk.

    The relationship between cargo, packaging and mode of transport is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The impact of handling methods and storage in the course of transit on transportation risk are explained with examples.

    A marine policy document is interpreted with reference to duration of cover, limit, voyage, exclusions and excess.

    The basic Institute Cargo clauses are compared and an indication is given of which clause is the most appropriate in a specific situation.
