PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners who are involved in gathering information on behalf of a researcher or organisation as part of a research project. It is assumed that the learner is not responsible for designing questionnaires or for analysing and presenting the final findings. It is It will be useful for learners who are required to apply geographical knowledge and skill in an authentic situation including, but not limited to, field workers, learners in rural land reform and community field projects, field rangers, market researchers, archaeological fieldworkers, learners in development projects, police, mountain rescue and environmental officers and learners in insurance and travel and tourism.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining own role in fieldwork investigations.
  • Demonstrating different ways of gathering information in the field.
  • Demonstrating techniques for documenting spatial data in the field.
  • Reporting field data. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Collection of data in the field, under supervision as part of a larger research project. Information may be qualitative and/or quantitative.
  • Information from a variety of maps, and photographic images.
  • The National Mapping Series including, but not limited to 1:10 000 orthophoto maps, 1:50 000 topographic maps, 1:250 000 topo-cadastral maps, 1:500 000 topo-admin edition, 1:2 000 000 wall map and provincial maps.
  • The Aeronautical edition (ICOA symbols) including; 1:1 000 000 world aeronautical chart (ICAO), 1:1 000 000 South Africa (4 sheets), 1:2 000 000 South Africa (2002 Edition), 1:2 500 000 topographical (Southern Africa), 1:2 500 000 magisterial districts and provinces (South Africa), Provincial Map, South Africa, maps of the Regional Series (various scales).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The outcomes of a fieldwork investigation are outlined and an indication is given of the individual's role in contributing to the outcome. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of careful, accurate data gathering is explained and an indication is given of the consequences of bias and misrepresenting information. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ethical issues relating to fieldwork investigations are discussed with reference to a specific investigation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate different ways of gathering information in the field. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different techniques for gathering information in the field are described and an indication is given of when each is appropriate. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Techniques include, but are not limited to, surveys, guided questionnaires, open-ended questionnaires, interviews, focus groups, sampling, enumerations, measuring, photographs, sketches and sketch maps.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Two different techniques for gathering and recording information from the environment are demonstrated with due regard for accuracy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Two different techniques for gathering and recording information from people are demonstrated with due regard for impartiality and cultural sensitivity. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate techniques for documenting spatial data in the field. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different ways of describing the location of data collection sites are identified and reasons why location is important are explained with reference to follow up and verification procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range: Ways of describing location include Global Positioning System (GPS), maps, photographs and other spatial information.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A sketch map of a selected site is drawn from observation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Information of the map includes, title, direction, key, approximate size or scale.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The use of electronic devices for documenting information in the field is explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Report field data.

    Information is collated for submission to the researcher, supervisor or organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A report on the fieldwork investigation is drafted indication own problems, personal observations and recommendations.

  • Assessors for this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the appropriate ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the appropriate ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the appropriate ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.
