A person credited with this unit standard will be capable of:

  • Inspecting and maintaining poles

    Excavate hole for erection of pole. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The position and dimensions of the excavation are done according to route markers and construction layout plans. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A safety risk assessment of the site is done according to statutory and work site requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The different types of excavation techniques for poles and stays are demonstrated practically. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Appropriate tools for excavation as per work site and soil formation requirements are selected and used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Appropriate excavation techniques are applied according to job requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Safety precautions relevant to the excavation are applied as per prescribed safe work procedures.

    Personal protective equipment is used according to statutory requirements and safe work procedures.

    Knowledge of different pole identification methods is demonstrated according to project specifications.

    Pole loading, offloading and handling techniques is demonstrated by using the correct rigging procedure.

    Knowledge of hand planting and mechanical planting techniques is demonstrated correctly according to the type of pole used.

    Knowledge of pole stacking techniques is applied according to safe work procedures.

    The pole is erected according to installation standards.

    Stay wires are installed according to installation standards.

    The legal requirements related to working under when working with poles is explained with to the relevant legislation.

    Specific assessment techniques are applied to determine condition of poles.

    Known appropriate remedial techniques are applied to damaged poles.

    Irreparably damaged poles are removed and replaced according to safe work procedures.

    Rehabilitate Worksite is rehabilitated to acceptable condition.
