This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering; Generation; Distribution; Transmission and Construction sector.

A person credited with this unit standard will be capable of:
  • Installing surface mounted cables
  • Installing under-surface cables
  • Installing cables in trenches

    Appropriate tools are selected and used according to the job requirements.

    Statutory requirements and manufacturers specifications related to installing surface mounted cables are explained with examples.

    Safety regulations relevant to installing surface cables are applied at all times.

    Surface cables are installed according to instructions.

    Correct tools for cutting and chasing are selected.

    Codes of practice with respect to cutting and chasing depths are applied according to sleeves/ducting and box specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Walls and floors are cut and chased according to pre-marked layout. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Safety regulations and procedures relevant to cutting and chasing are applied at all times. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Sleeves/ducting into the cut and chased slots in the wall or floor are installed, supported and secured.

    Work area is restored to an acceptable condition.

    Trench for installation of cable is prepared according to relevant code of practice and statutory requirements.

    Dimensions of trench are excavated according to code of practice for different cable types and sizes.

    The impact of trenching on the environment is explained with examples.

    Location of other services encountered is reported in the corrected format.

    Knowledge of different rolling out techniques and equipment used is applied.

    Cables are installed in trench according to task procedures and statutory requirements.
