PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner, in combination with other content related unit standards, will demonstrate an understanding of volunteerism in South Africa and be able to assist management in the co-ordination of volunteer activities within the community, organisation and workplace.

A learner accredited with this unit standard will be capable of:
  • Understanding the value of volunteerism in Victim Empowerment in the South African context
  • Distinguishing between the roles and responsibilities of volunteers and paid staff
  • Describing the roles and responsibilities of organisations/agencies utilising volunteers
  • Co-ordinating and implementing volunteer activities to a prescribed volunteer programme plan
  • Applying organisational procedures regarding the co-ordination of volunteer activities 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF level 2 or equivalent
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 2 or equivalent

    The rationale of having a formal Volunteer Management Programme is explained and key components of the Volunteer Management Cycle is described according to relevant sources of reference. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The techniques used to recruit and select volunteers are explained as per Victim Empowerment organisation/institution/workplace policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Volunteer induction and orientation procedures are described according to the Victim Empowerment organisation/institution/workplace practices. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of orientation topics include, but not limited to: orientation to organisation, volunteer code of conduct, values and attitudes, mission, vision and nature of work.

    Risks associated with volunteer programmes are identified and the value of managing these risks are described according to relevant sources of reference.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Moderation
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in this Unit Standard as well as the integrated competence described in the Exit Level Outcome of the Qualification.

  • Assessors must be registered as assessors with a relevant ETQA or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessors must be in possession of a Qualification in Victim Empowerment or a related sub-field of Human and Social Studies at a minimum of NQF level 4.
