PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:

Apply the optimum amount of water to various plants to ensure healthy growth and development.

Select the most suitable watering equipment to water various plantings.

Select the appropriate frequency of watering to suit prevailing conditions.

Demonstrate the correct methods of watering to prevent run-off and wastage.

Utilise knowledge of good watering practices for the propagation and care of plants.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1

Select the most appropriate time of day, or conditions to conduct watering.

OUTCOME RANGE

The range includes but is not limited to: High evaporation rate, low evaporation rate - still air, coolest time of the day, dew point wind, hottest time of the day.

The climatic factors that negatively affect watering efficiency are described.

The consequences of watering in windy conditions are explained.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2

Select and demonstrate the use of watering equipment to affect an application rate that suits various soil conditions.

OUTCOME RANGE

The range includes but is not limited to: hose end nozzles, watering can nozzles and spouts, cone sprinklers, rotary sprinklers, infiltration rate of soils, prevent water wastage, puddling, run-off, slopes, degree of compaction.

The infiltration rates of various soil types are described.

The necessity to apply water at or below the infiltration rate is explained.

The effect that slopes and compaction have on the infiltration rate of soils is explained.

The various hose end spray nozzles and their adjustments are demonstrated.

Examples of hose end cone sprinklers, their application rates and uses are demonstrated.

The range includes but is not limited to: Summer, spring, autumn and winter water plant usage, dormant periods, deciduous shrubs and trees.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

The relationship that the various seasons have on the water requirements of plants is explained.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

The necessity of modifying the frequency and length of watering times to cope with seasonal changes in evapotranspiration rates are described.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

The need to reduce the watering of deciduous plants in their dormancy period is explained.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4

Modify the frequency and quantity of watering to suit the evapotranspiration and rainfall.

OUTCOME RANGE

The range includes but is not limited to: Ratio of climatic variation - rainfall received, scheduled watering frequency, scheduled timing of water application, testing of the soil water content.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

The importance of increasing the watering timing, relative to an increase in E.T. is explained.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

The modification of the frequency of watering, to suit varying climatic conditions, is explained.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

The use of a rain gauge and the reading of received rainfall are demonstrated.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

The adjustment of watering times, in response to rainfall received, is described.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5

The importance of regular testing of the soil water content is explained.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6

The procedures for the manual testing of the soil water content are demonstrated.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA.

Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

The assessment of qualifying learners against this standard should meet the requirements of established principles. Practical assessment activities will be used, which are appropriate to the contents in which qualifying learners are working. These activities will include an appropriate combination of self and peer assessment, practical and oral assessments, observations etc.

The assessment should ensure that all the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge be assessed. The specific outcomes must be assessed in its own right, through oral and practical evidence. It cannot be assessed by observation only.

The specific outcomes and essential knowledge must be assessed in relation to each other. If a qualifying learner is able to explain the essential embedded knowledge, but is unable to perform the specific outcomes, then they should not be assessed as competent. Similarly, if a learner is able to perform specific outcomes, but is unable to explain or justify their performance in terms of the essential embedded knowledge, they should not be assessed as competent.

Evidence of the specified critical cross-field outcomes should be found, both in performance and in the essential embedded knowledge.

Performance of specific outcomes must actively affirm target groups of qualifying learners, not unfairly discriminate against them. Qualifying learners should be able to justify their performance in terms of these values.

Embedded knowledge is reflected within the assessment criteria of each specific outcome and must be assessed in its own right, through oral and written evidence. Observation cannot be the only assessment.
