PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners working towards this standard will be working within a Public Sector environment, specialising in Public Finance Management and Administration, where the acquisition of competence against this standard will add value to one's job. This standard will also add value to public officials who are seeking to develop a career pathway towards becoming an accomplished public finance management and administration specialist.

    Different roleplayers in disaster management are identified and their responsibilities used to enhance the management of selected disasters are outlined.

    Possible early warning systems for different disasters are identified.

    An understanding of the actors involved in disaster policy including their powers and limits to power are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The principles underpinning standards on counter disaster strategies for records and recordkeeping in the public sector are identified and discussed to inform government readiness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Different disaster management policies are related to the typically associated disaster and the implications of the policy explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Issues and processes for government readiness to prepare communities for disasters are identified and discussed.

    Issues and processes include but are not limited to finding out about the process of assessing risk, creating emergency operations plans, acquiring resources, training, exercising and educating the public, methods for implementing these preparedness measures.

    Various case studies and possible disaster scenario's are analysed and recommendations made pertaining to the effective management thereof.

    Plans developed to mitigate against such disasters are defined. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Case studies are analysed within the context of disaster policies, politics, disaster methodologies utilised, and effects on overall socio-economic status.
