PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This learner will be able to perform plumbing functions listed in this unit standard under supervision.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Installing, inspecting and maintaining below ground drainage systems, building, inspecting and maintaining drainage access structures and installing on-site sanitation systems.

    These learning outcomes form part of the Elective learning in the "National Certificate in Construction".

    This unit standard will contribute to the development of more professional construction workers.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the construction environment.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this unit standard:
  • The installation, repair and maintenance of below ground drainage systems are according to the following qualitative specifications:
    > SABS 0252: 1994 Water supply and drainage for Buildings
    > Part 2: Drainage Installations for Buildings
    > SABS 0400: 1990 Code of Practice for the Application of the National Building Regulations, Part P: Drainage
    > SABS 1200 series, including LB: Bedding (Pipes) and LD: Sewers
  • Sewer and drainpipes include: uPVC, HDPE, reinforced concrete, earthenware (Vitrified clay), and fibre reinforced cement.
  • Trench excavations include for battering of side slopes in non-cohesive soils, and for shoring.
  • Cleaning of sewer and drainpipes includes rodding, and jetting.
  • Manholes include the use of concrete cast in-situ and precast, brick masonry, precast concrete rings, and prefabricated manholes.
  • Sewer and drain fittings include: Bends, junctions, couplings, level invert tapers, adaptors, rodding eyes, access fittings, gulley traps, channel fittings, overflow gulley heads and grease traps.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the CETA - ETQA for this unit standard or a similar unit standard at a higher NQF Level.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the CETA-ETQA.
