PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Qualifying learners credited with this unit standard are able to determine, after consultation, the most suitable cutting design for the client and demonstrate an understanding of cutting techniques by correctly shaping/cutting hair to produce a range of styles, using all cutting techniques. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The context of this unit standard is Ladies Hair - Caucasian type and competency includes cutting different lengths of hair, using a variety of cutting techniques on a variety of female clients. 

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
Cut hair using a variety of one length looks taking into account critical influencing factors 
OUTCOME NOTES 
Cut hair using a variety of one length looks taking into account critical influencing factors such as hair texture, head/face shape and hair growth patterns. 
OUTCOME RANGE 
Use different cutting techniques on curly and straight hair to create a variety of one-length looks. Variety of one-length looks includes above the shoulder, below the shoulder, with a fringe and without a fringe.

4. The client is gowned and protected in readiness for a haircut according to salon procedures.

  • Safety precautions.
  • Factors influencing choice of cut.
  • Hair growth patterns.
  • Recognise and identify cutting implements.
  • Sanitation, sterilisation and maintenance of cutting implements.
  • Principles of hair cutting.
  • Cutting techniques such as scissors over comb, clipper over comb, texturising, clipper cutting, razor, thinning shears and free hand.

    Identify and solve problems in which responses display that responsible decisions using critical and creative thinking have been made.

    The learner must be able to select the most suitable hair cutting design for the client which will demand from the learner the ability to identify problems and solve these in a critical and creative manner.

    Continuous assessment of the learner's ability to create the most suitable hair cut design. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING 
    Communicate effectively using visual, mathematical and or language skills in the modes of oral and or written persuasion.

    In order to select the most suitable style as well as the specific techniques to be used to achieve the style and satisfy the client, the learner must be able to communicate effectively using visual, and language skills in the modes of oral persuasion.

    Continuous assessment of the learner's ability to analyse and complete analysis card and select correct products.

  • This unit standard will be assessed as part of the Integrated Assessment for Cutting and Shaping of Hair.

    Professional manner is assessed according to aspects such as ethical standards, commitment to service, personal and interpersonal skills, body language, tone of voice, posture and personal appearance.

    Safety precautions that must be demonstrated for assessment includes:
  • Protection of client's clothes and face;
  • Testing of water temperature to ensure client comfort;
  • Control of water pressure;
  • Protection of client's head against banging or scratching;
  • Using clean towels and tools;
  • Loose hair on floor is swept immediately after cutting;
  • Cutting instruments must be palmed and blades closed if not cutting;
  • Cutting implements are kept away from water;
  • Clean, oiled blades are used;
  • Sharp instruments are handled with care.
