PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Qualifying learners credited with this unit standard are able to support personal and public health and safety in the salon by explaining and demonstrating cleaning, sanitising and sterilising in the salon according to industry accepted standards. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Literacy, numeracy, communication and language skills equal to a GET NQF Level 1 Certificate. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The typical scope and context of this unit standard is the hairdressing salon/working environment and covers all services offered within the profession of hairdressing.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
Demonstrate and discuss the different methods of sterilisation and sanitation procedures 
OUTCOME NOTES 
Demonstrate and discuss the different methods of sterilisation and sanitation procedures performed in the salon and explain the importance of maintaining a clean and safe working environment.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
1. Learners can identify and recognise for purposes of sterilisation and sanitation, the tools, equipment, materials and work areas in a hairdressing salon.

2. Learners can explain and identify where possible the different infectious diseases that may be encountered in a hairdressing salon.

3. Learners can explain pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria.

4. Learners can explain where bacteria are most often encountered in the salon environment.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
1. The learners clean and sanitise their own hands and nails prior to services being performed. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
2. The learners explain and demonstrate the sanitisation and sterilisation of the salon environment according to workplace procedures. Salon environment in this instance includes:
  • floors, working surfaces, display cabinets, mirrors, basins, toilets.

    3. The learners explain and demonstrate the cleaning, sanitisation and sterilisation of salon equipment according to workplace procedures. Salon equipment in this instance includes:
  • trolleys, dryers, stoves, steamers, chairs, infra-red lights, towels and gowns.

    4. The learners explain and demonstrate the cleaning, sanitisation and sterilisation of tools according to workplace procedures. Tools in this instance includes:
  • curling irons, combs, brushes, clippers, scissors, razors, tint brushes, bowls, measuring cups, clips, caps, clamps, heating lamps, gloves etc.

    Explain and demonstrate basic First Aid procedures applicable to salon practices.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Learners show that they can deal with minor injuries in the salon by explaining and demonstrating the appropriate methods of basic First Aid. Minor injuries in this instance includes:
  • minor burns, minor wounds, bleeding, abrasions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Learners show that they can deal with serious injuries in the salon by explaining and discussing the appropriate methods according to workplace procedures. Serious injuries in this instance includes:
  • burns and scalds, heat burns, shock, fainting, epileptic fit, hysteria, fractures, eye injuries, nose bleed, poisoning.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Demonstrate and explain effective procedures for dealing with disposable waste in the salon 
    OUTCOME NOTES 
    Demonstrate and explain effective procedures for dealing with disposable waste in the salon environment following all applicable safety procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The learners show that they can effectively deal with all disposables and waste materials in the salon environment by explaining and demonstrating procedures to follow according to workplace procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    Discussing Microbiology in regard to safety precautions and procedures in the salon/working environment including:
  • Micro-organisms such as bacteria and viruses;
  • Pathogenic and non-pathogenic micro-organisms;
  • Pathogenic micro-organisms such as Protozoa, Bacteria (and the boils and acne they may cause), Fungi and examples of fungal infections, and Viruses with reference to the AIDS and Hepatitis B they may cause, and how to protect oneself against AIDS;
  • Areas where pathogenic bacteria may enter the body;
  • Areas in the salon where micro-organisms may be found in large numbers;
  • That serious infections such as AIDS and Hepatitis B, though a relatively low risk in hairdressing salons, call for precautions to be taken.
  • The need for hygienic practices in hairdressing salons;
  • The way in which to handle clients with obvious scalp problems;
  • Control of micro-organisms by sanitation and sterilization


    Discussing and explaining, in regard to sanitation and sterilisation the difference between sanitation and sterilisation;

    Describing the control of micro-organisms by means of sanitising and sterilising;

    Discussing and explaining:
  • sterilisation equipment,
  • sterilisation by disinfectants,
  • disinfection of the skin by means of antiseptics,
  • disinfection of tools and equipment,
  • disinfection of surfaces, floors and furniture,
  • disinfection if blood is spilt,
  • alcohol strength for salon use,
  • older methods of sterilisation,
  • preparation of a fumigant for a dry steriliser, and
  • ultra violet ray sterilisers

    Learners will be continuously assessed in the maintenance of a clean and safe working environment. The learner must be able to organise and manage his or her activities responsibly and effectively. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE 
    Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others.

    The ability to demonstrate correct sanitising and sterilising procedures as well as basic First Aid procedures, would demand from the learner the use of science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others.

    Professional manner is assessed according to aspects such as ethical standards, commitment to service, personal and interpersonal skills, body language, tone of voice where applicable, posture and personal appearance.

    This unit standard is a pre-requisite to all the hairdressing standards and will be continuously assessed as part of cluster assessment to maintain the standard of performance.
