PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard requires learners to have the background knowledge required to assess a medical risk. It will be useful for underwriters, life claims assessors, reinsurers, medical claims assessors who need to apply knowledge of the digestive and urinary systems to assess long term risk.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the anatomy and physiology of the digestive and urinary systems.
  • Explaining the main conditions and impairments related to the digestive and urinary systems.
  • Interpreting evidence related to digestive and urinary system conditions and impairments.
  • Applying knowledge of the digestive and urinary systems to assess risk.

    The typical scope of this unit standard is:
  • The digestive system in this standard includes the colonic systems.
  • The main conditions of the digestive system include, but are not limited to, cancer disorders, colitis, Crohn's disorder, ulcerated disorders, insulin disorders, hepatic disorder and pancreatic disorder.
  • Evidence includes, but is not limited to, Scans, x-rays, renal function tests, scopes and pathology reports.
  • The urinary system in this standard includes the kidneys, bladder and urethra.
  • The main conditions of the urinary system include, but are not limited to, cancer disorders, urinary problems, renal failure, renal spasms and nephritic disorders.
  • Evidence includes, but is not limited to, urine tests, Scans, x-rays, renal function tests, scopes and pathology reports.
  • Risk factors include, but are not limited to, medical and lifestyle risks.

    The relationship between the major organs within the urinary system is explained with examples.

    The relationship between the kidneys and the digestive system is explained with examples.

    Explain the main conditions and impairments related to the digestive and urinary systems.

    The main conditions of the digestive system are identified and an indication is given of the symptoms, treatment, prognosis and impairment related to each.

    The main conditions of the urinary system are identified and an indication is given of the symptoms, treatment, prognosis and impairment related to each. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The impact of lifestyle on the major organs of the digestive and urinary systems is explained with examples.

    Interpret evidence related to digestive and urinary system conditions and impairments.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Objective medical evidence of digestive system related impairments is identified and an indication is given of when and why each type of evidence is required to support an assessment decision. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Objective medical evidence of urinary system related impairments is identified and an indication is given of when and why each type of evidence is required to support an assessment decision. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Medical evidence is interpreted in order to make an assessment decision and indication is given of when it is necessary to refer evidence to the next level of authority. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of wrong or inappropriate decisions in assessing long term risk are explained from the point of view of the underwriter, claims assessor, insurer and the client.
