PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended to meet the needs of learners who interact with individuals and groups in a counselling context where clients are enabled to go through the process of finding solutions to their concerns or difficulties. It should develop learners who are able to manage themselves in relation to others, interact with other people and behave ethically in a counselling context. It will be useful for learners who counsel clients in a variety of contexts including, but not limited to, schools, Non-Governmental Organisations, Faith Based Organisations, the South African Police Service, Counselling Call Centres, Hospitals, Clinics and Support Agencies, Sports Centres, Education and Training facilities, Government and Health facilities.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining different types of relationships.
  • Investigating factors that impact on interpersonal relationships.
  • Developing skills and techniques for managing interpersonal relationships.
  • Demonstrating ability to manage self in relation to others.
  • Exploring aspects of inter cultural communication that have implications for relationships. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at NQF Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is intrapersonal, interpersonal and group relationships in a counselling context.

    Explain different types of relationship. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Intrapersonal, interpersonal and group relationships are compared in terms of the implications for the counselling context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The dynamics that manifest in different relationships are explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Investigate factors that impact on interpersonal relationships.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Positive factors that enhance a relationship are identified in a specific relationship. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Positive factors include, but are not limited to, trust, empathy, self-esteem, openness, disclosure, safety, personality, coping mechanisms, commitment to the process, flexibility and adaptability.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Barriers to a relationship are identified for a specific relationship. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Barriers include, but are not limited to, self righteousness, suspicion, being judgemental, bias, jealousy, selfishness and defence mechanisms.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Factors that can enhance the development of a relationship are identified to inform an intervention. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate skills and techniques for managing interpersonal relationships.

    The effect of communication in a relationship is explained with reference to verbal and non verbal communication.

    Communication used in a relationship is observed in order to infer information about the relationship.

    Skills for improving relationships are demonstrated for different contexts. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Skills include, but are not limited to, empathy, conflict management, power dynamics, setting boundaries, building rapport and assertiveness.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Skills for managing the effect of others on self are explored with reference to spill over. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Demonstrate ability to manage self in relation to others.

    Own responses and emotions are identified in different situations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effects of own attitudes and values on different relationships are identified in order to enhance or minimise their potential impact on other relationships.

    The nature of personal boundaries is analysed in order to determine whether they are appropriate and to implement acceptable boundaries. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Blind spots and red flags that trigger uncontrollable responses in self are identified and an indication is given of how these can be managed effectively.

    A plan for continuous personal development is designed that includes self monitoring of behaviour and adjustment where necessary.

    The culture of a community is researched in order to recognise and acknowledge how culture influences relationships and communication. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Stereotypes in a community are identified with reference to their link between prejudice, discrimination and victimisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A strategy is devised to address aspects of interpersonal relationships emanating from cultural practice.
