PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can participate meaningfully in analysing conflict, and designing and implementing a plan to manage and resolve conflict.

People credited with this standard are capable of:
  • Gathering information about conflict,
  • Analysing information about conflict,
  • Reviewing and selecting an appropriate process to deal with conflict;
  • Planning a process to deal with conflict; and
  • Implementing plans to deal with conflict. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners starting to learn towards this unit standard are proficient in Language, Literacy and Communication at NQF level 4 or equivalent.

    It is further assumed the learner is knowledgeable in a range of conflict resolution methods that include intrapersonal, interpersonal, intra-group and inter-group approaches.

    The interests, needs, positions and perceptions of all parties involved are analysed and presented in a report format.

    Different process options to manage, resolve or transform conflict are identified and explained in terms of the process, application, strengths and weaknesses. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Process options include preventive mechanisms; joint problem solving, negotiation, mediation, adjudication, arbitration, court and power processes, peace making, peace keeping and peace building.

    An appropriate process option is selected and explained in terms of dealing with conflict.

    A comprehensive understanding of the conflict and an appropriate response to the analysis is given in the plan.

    The creation of a climate conducive to dealing with the conflict effectively is explained and promoted during the process of implementing the plan.

    A plan is implemented and the process is facilitated using a range of communication and interpersonal skills. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes respect, empathy, authenticity, integrity and openness.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The implementation plan is monitored using a range of activities and planned criteria, and the plan is modified accordingly.

    An evaluation of the process is explained in terms of strengths and weaknesses and improvements are indicated for dealing with future conflicts. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.
  • Registered assessors must have a qualification in Conflict at NQF level 6 or higher or equivalent.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
