PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners who gather and present information or serve as fact-finders in conflict situations. It is particularly useful for learners who are involved in conflict resolution.

Learners credited with this unit standard are capable of:
  • Collecting information about conflict
  • Presenting information on conflict
  • Analysing conflict
  • Interpreting conflict.

    Learners starting to learn towards this unit standard are proficient in Language, Literacy and Communication at NQF level 4. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    In-depth analysis and interpretation of various types of conflict situations.

    "Conflict" refers to complex multiparty conflicts, deep-rooted value conflicts, escalated conflicts involving violence

    "Analysis" refers to showing greater understanding of cultural dynamics, gender analysis, analysis resources available and analysis power. The analysis places greater emphasis on socio-economic and socio-political factors.

    A range of conflicts are analysed and examined in terms of key issues using effective application of analytical tools.

    Key issues are sources, types, causes, manifestations, and aggravators and moderators of conflict, context, dynamics of the relationship of the parties.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The interests, needs, positions and perceptions of all parties involved are analysed, explained and presented in relation to two conflict situations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The limitations of the analysis are identified and acknowledged in terms of process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The findings are presented in a clear and structured form that provides the basis for further interpretation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Issues of transparency versus confidentiality are applied as appropriate to the situation.

    Causes include resources, prejudice, discrimination, poverty, power, values, injustice, misinformation, change and unsatisfied human needs.

    Human responses to conflict are differentiated and compared with different types of conflicts. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Responses are avoidance, accommodation, force, compromise, joint problem solving, and aggravators and moderators of conflict.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Appropriate processes to address conflict are identified and recommended based on the results of the analysis.

    Processes include joint problem solving, negotiation, mediation, adjudication, arbitration, court and power processes.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.
  • Registered assessors must have a qualification in Conflict at NQF level 6 or higher or equivalent.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
