PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A person credited with this unit standard is able to demonstrate an ability to apply entrepreneurial principles related to a new business venture. Skills obtained after successfully completing this unit standard will provide learners with generic entrepreneurial business competencies.

In particular, on completion of this unit standard, the learner is able to:
  • Prepare to create a new business venture.
  • Prepare input for a business plan.
  • Interpret and utilise a business plan.
  • Assess the viability of a market in terms of products/services.
  • Implement stock control activities.
  • Apply promotion and selling techniques. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 4.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Although the learner will gain knowledge of various business principles and forms as related to new or small business ventures, this unit standard alone will not prepare him/her to open a branch of a large or existing organisation, or to open a franchise operation.
  • This unit standard alone will not represent an introduction to business management.

    Business ideas are generated and the most suitable idea is investigated further to determine its viability.

    Market potential for the selected business idea is researched and assessed.

    A relevant form of ownership is decided upon in consultation with key stakeholders. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Legal requirements relating to the creating of a new business are identified and compliance achieved.

    Prepare input for a business plan and analyse it once completed.

    Financial requirements for the potential business can be determined and arrangements to achieve the required funding made.

    Competitors within the marketplace are researched and assessed in terms of the capacity to achieve the required market share or to grow the market.

    The target market is evaluated in terms of size, buying power and interest in or demand for the planned range of products/services. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Price, packaging and placement for the planned range of products/services are determined. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The potential business is positioned for optimal exposure and access to and by the target market.

    Stock keeping records and processes are accurately set up and maintained.

    Stock levels can be monitored to ensure adequate and appropriate supplies of stock are available.

    Stock is correctly handled and securely stored in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and to ensure quick and safe access thereto. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Stock counts and evaluations can be performed to determine the effectiveness of stock control activities and accuracy.
