PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to make, repair and modify jigs and templates as per standards.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Making jigs and templates.
  • Repairing and modifying jigs and templates. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in numeracy and literacy equivalent to NQF level 2.
  • They will also have achieved, or be able to demonstrate equivalent competence to, the National Certificate in Furniture Wood Machining and Cabinet Making at NQF level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following elements include, but are not limited to:
  • Jigs and templates: for one offs; for multiple use; for short term use; for long term use
  • Materials: masonite: MDF; perspex; plywood; appropriate new materials or off cuts
  • Tools and equipment: hand tools; power tools; toggle clamps
  • Production downtime: as a result of damaged or faulty jigs and templates

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The specification is obtained and jig and template requirements are determined according to production, quality and organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Correct materials for making jigs and templates are obtained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tools and equipment needed for jig and template making are confirmed to be in correct condition for safe and effective use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Appropriate methods for making jigs and templates are identified which include Health and Safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Jigs and templates made, provide for secure and safe attachment, accurate calibrators and sizing for their production purpose. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Jigs are confirmed to specification accuracy, and accurate sample match. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Where jig does not meet sample requirements, adjustments and modifications are made and checks confirm accuracy.

    Jigs and templates are correctly labeled and placed in a designated location.
