PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful to learners who wish to gain a deeper understanding of how their lifestyle compares with the values expressed in the Bible, how they might begin to modify those lifestyles, and how they might help their community modify their lifestyles.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Discover what is meant by 'values'
  • Identify and describe Christian values
  • Compare their personal lifestyle with those expressed in the Bible.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are assumed to be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    Discover what values are operating in the learner's context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Situations in the learner's context are examined to discover what values are operating. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Current personal, family, community and national situations. Reference to newspapers, television, radio, personal contacts. A maximum of 5 situations examined.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Currently-operating values are listed and described with reference to the media and real life situations. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify basic Christian values.

    Selected passages from the Bible and other Christian literature are examined to see what values are operating. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Include texts from the Bible and from creeds, devotional books and other Christian literature. 'Values' may include love, loyalty, faithfulness, selfishness, fear, courage.

    Personal lifestyle is compared with the lifestyle of other people.

    Personal lifestyle is compared with identified Christian and biblical values. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Apply Christian values with and to a community.

    The values found to be operating in the learner's context are compared with the values discovered Christian tradition and in the bible.

    Major differences are examined and suggestions made as to possible remedial action.
