PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful to those who are pastorally engaged with people troubled by witchcraft and sorcery, or who live in a community where witchcraft accusations are common.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Describe and discuss beliefs and practices related to witchcraft and sorcery in a local community.
  • Describe and compare Christian responses to witchcraft and sorcery in different periods.
  • Describe and apply Christian values and moral principles relevant to counselling people who are affected by witchcraft and sorcery.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are assumed to be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    Beliefs and practices in witchcraft are described with references to those compatible with other descriptions of similar groups.

    Different interpretations of witchcraft beliefs are described and explained by means of comparisons.

    Sources from which information on sorcery and witchcraft is gleaned are identified and discussed as references.

    Describe and compare Christian responses to witchcraft and sorcery in different periods.

    The similarities and differences between Christian responses and local cultural beliefs are described with reference to the bible, the Church and the community.

    Describe and apply Christian values and moral principles relevant to counselling people who are affected by witchcraft and sorcery.

    The Christian values to be applied are listed and described with reference to biblical, historical and ethical values.

    Values are applied in counselling.

    Assessors should keep the following particular issues into consideration when assessing against this Unit Standard:
  • The learners should show awareness of the key Christian values of love and forgiveness, and thus that witchcraft and sorcery are inappropriate behaviour for Christians, and also that those who have practised, or attempted to practise witchcraft and sorcery are to be encouraged to repent and be restored to the community.

    Definition of Terms:

  • Witchcraft: an attempt to harm another person, or the person's family, property or reputation, by spiritual, magical or occult means.
  • Sorcery: An attempt to harm another person, their family, property or reputation by means of substances believed to have magical powers to cause harm.
