PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful to learners who wish to gain an overview of the content and background of the whole of the Bible, and to understand how historical, political and social context influenced and shaped the biblical text.

Learners credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Outline the historical and political background of the whole of the Bible.
  • Describe how this background actively influenced the formation of the text of the books of the Bible.
  • Apply this general learning to particular texts from the Bible.

    Learners are assumed to be competent in Communication at NQF Level 3 and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.

    Specific range statements are provided in the body of the Unit Standard where they apply to particular learning outcomes or assessment criteria.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Outline the historical background of the Bible. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    'Historical' should include elements of political, economic and social influences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Major events and turning points through the whole of the biblical period are described and explained in accordance with modern scholarly research. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    From 2000 BCE to 150 CE, in the Mediterranean geographical area.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Links between the historical background and major events are explained with reference to the Bible. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Major events to include: Beginnings of monarchy in Israel, the Division of the Kingdom, the fall of the Northern Kingdom, the start and end of the Exile, the accession to power of the Hamoneans and the destruction of the Second Temple and Jerusalem.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Outline the background and content of the books of the Bible. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Every book in the Bible to be covered, but not necessarily all at the same depth.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Links between the background and the content are made of each book. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ways in which context influences and forms text are described and explained through deduction. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Describe the formation of the Bible. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The particular events that influenced the formation of the Bible are sequenced and described in accordance with modern scholarship. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The basic processes of the formation of ancient literature are identified and described through study of biblical texts. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Show how 'context' and 'text' are linked in specific texts in the Bible. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    At least 5 examples should be chosen. They should be chosen from texts which are relatively easy to locate in an historical context. Examples of such texts might be Isaiah 6, Jeremiah 31, Matthew 2 and Acts 24.

    Links between 'context' and 'text' are identified and described through analysis of particular biblical texts.

    The interaction between 'context' and 'text' is clearly and simply explained by analysis of texts.
