PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Identify, use and maintain power tools used in the air conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation trades. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • It is assumed that people starting to learn towards this unit standard are already able to communicate effectively with others.
  • Work safely and use safety equipment when carrying out mechanical or electrical work.
  • Use of hand tools.

    Tools:
    Drilling machines, grinding machines, power hacksaws, jigsaws, presses, nibblers, electric screwdrivers, "Hilti" guns.

    Identify power tools used in the air conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation trades.

    Power tools are each correctly identified according to their manufacturer's name or by their generic/trade names.

    Power tools are inspected for suitability and safe usage.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Each tool is used, with personal protection equipment, if required, only to perform the function for which it is designed and in a manner consistent with its manufacturer's intent. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal protection equipment is used correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Consequences of abuse of power tools are listed and explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    No injury or damage is caused.

    Maintain power tools.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Each tool is maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Where none exist, each tool is cleaned with a cloth or brush after use to remove residue, swarf or dirt. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools are each inspected for damaged or worn-out components before and after use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Faulty or damaged components are reported and replaced if available. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    No faulty or damaged tools are used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Personal protection equipment is used correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    No injury or damage is caused.

    Any person wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, who may appoint a moderator to be present at the assessment.
    The assessor must have knowledge and experience in the use of power tools used in the air conditioning, refrigeration or ventilation trades.
