PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner is capable of:

Integrating knowledge and understanding of access scaffolding and related applications with skills for planning, organising and controlling a range of activities associated with the erection, alteration/repositioning and dismantling of access scaffolding.

The competencies contained in this unit standard form part of the Elective learning of this qualification and extend beyond the mechanical completion of tasks associated with access scaffolding operations and contribute towards the professional development of the learner by equipping him/her with enhanced knowledge and skills for the effective supervision of access scaffolding operations that are carried out in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and Regulations for work conducted at heights well above ground level and industry requirements for cost-effective and quality workmanship completed within prescribed deadlines.

This unit standard further contributes to socio-economic transformation in that learners will be able to undergo RPL-assessment and receive recognition for previous learning and experience, thereby enhancing the employability and career prospects of learners within the Civil Engineering Construction field.

Relevant sections contained in the latest edition of SANS 10085 - 1: 2003 (Edition 1) associated with access scaffolding include but are not limited to: ordinary type (tower, independent, putlog and bird cage) and special scaffolds not exceeding 240kg/sq.m and not exceeding SANS 10085 - 1: 2003 (Edition 1) requirements

Site risk assessment includes but is not limited to: the use of equipment for lifting materials to required heights, the use of ropes for pulling up materials on the outside of structures, erection of temporary public protection and barricading

  • The Access scaffolding Team Leader shall only be appointed in writing to lead a access scaffolding team once he has completed the training required in SANS 10085 - 1: 2003 (Edition 1) 16.2.5, i.e. Learners will have demonstrated competence in basic inspection of ordinary access scaffolds and leading various teams of access scaffolding erectors under various construction site conditions
  • The high and often fatal risks associated with work conducted at heights well above ground level necessitates that learners fulfill the following criteria contained in SANS 10085 - 1: 2003 (Edition 1) 16.2.5 and 16.2.6 prior to attempting this unit standard and,
    His/her total access scaffolding experience exceeds two years and six months.
  • Safe working loads on platforms and total loading on uprights calculated from drawings or requirements for Special scaffolding designs shall be approved by a person competent in scaffold design and/ or a professional engineer
  • Due to the fact that SANS 10085 - 1: 2003 (Edition 1) and Construction Regulations are still not published, changes to this unit standard can be expected
