PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering; Generation; Distribution; Transmission; Construction and Renewable Energy Sectors.

A person credited with this unit standard will be capable of:
  • Understanding and applying energy efficiency in terms of input, losses and the resultant output, energy management, energy savings and energy efficient devices.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment.

    Energy efficiency is described and determined in terms of output, input and losses.

    The efficiency of renewable energy devices is determined in terms of output, input and losses.

    Renewable energy devices includes but is not limited to photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, batteries, etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Losses of low voltage, building wiring systems are determined in terms of resistive losses and voltage drop. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Low voltage refers to that of typical renewable energy systems and buildings refers to rural schools, homes, clinics, etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Conductor size is selected correctly in terms of the low voltage renewable energy system specifications.

    Energy efficient devices are installed and connected in terms of statutory requirements and the manufacturers specifications.

  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA.
